New England is a small district within Freetown perched high upon the hills overlooking the valley below that leads to the coast. The community chairman James Alimamy Samkoh told us that they built the school for the New England children to cut down on the distances they would have to walk to get an education.
The school comprised of and handful of rustic tin and timber sheds educates 175 children. The biggest classroom is open plan and houses 5 classes. 100 children cram into the shed and face the 1 blackboard that each teacher has to teach with - this is their only educational resource.
James said that some children are lucky enough to find scrap paper and a pencil to write with, however, these children are the minority as most of them have nothing and try to remember the information in their head.
Some resources from the first shipment to SL were handed out to the children. As a follow up, 200 SchoolBags and half a container load of resources including furniture, library books, uniforms and stationery have been sent to them. In response, they will rename the school to the 'Piers Simon School, New England - Sierra Leone'.
